I love a good protein shake after a hard workout and this has become my new favorite combo. It’s thick, creamy, slightly sweet and tastes like vanilla cake in a protein shake!
Have your cake and eat it too: cake batter protein shake!
I honestly hate cake, but I LOVE the taste of egg in cake, so I’m honestly not sure why I didn’t get this recipe sooner to make my favorite egg protein in cake. Made with a combination of 7 simple ingredients, it’s a little sweet but not too sweet, and it couldn’t be easier to make.
Recipe ingredients and notes
This is just an overview of the main ingredients in this recipe. See recipe card for full ingredients and instructions.
- Frozen banana: this is my secret to thick, creamy shakes that are naturally delicious.
- Cashew Butter: this helps give the protein shake a creamy consistency and adds a bit of cake batter flavor.
- Greek yogurt: I prefer to use whole milk Greek yogurt for a richer flavor and creamier consistency, but low-fat or non-fat yogurt will work too.
- Flavor extracts: vanilla extract and almond extract give the protein shake that classic cake batter flavor.
- Protein powder: this plain protein powder it’s my favorite because it doesn’t change the flavor and doesn’t have a light texture, but vanilla or cupcake-flavored protein powder works well, too. Use the one you like the most!
- Almond milk: Unsweetened almond milk is my go-to for shakes, but any regular or plant-based milk will work.

Ways to Customize Your Cake Dough Protein Shake Recipe
One of my favorite things about shake and shake recipes is that they are mine blueberry smoothie, mashed bananaor scrambled eggs, how versatile it can be. Feel free to get creative and add extra nutrition and flavor. Below are some great additions:
- Collagen powder: I love the addition of a scoop collagen powder an extra hit of protein to keep you full.
- Flax seeds below: Flax seeds they’re full of health benefits, and you can’t even taste them!
- Chia seeds: I recommend adding a teaspoon or so chia seeds. As long as you use a relatively small amount, they don’t change the texture of the shake too much.
- Hemp seeds: This is another seed I like to add to my lashes hemp seedsfor all the health benefits. I usually add 1/2 tsp.
- Oatmeal: I love adding 1/4 cup stale oats to add even more fiber and whole grains to my smoothies. You can’t even taste them!
- Make it without milk: swap out the Greek yogurt for your favorite dairy-free Greek-style yogurt to keep this recipe completely dairy-free. I don’t recommend removing it completely, otherwise your lashes will be too harsh.
- Use vanilla yogurt: If you want more vanilla flavor to your shake, you can use vanilla Greek yogurt instead of plain.
- Make it sweeter: Depending on the sweetness of your banana and the type of protein powder, you may want to sweeten your shake. Add a tablespoon or so of maple syrup, honey or even a date to suit your flavor preferences.

My top tips for the best protein shake
- Add the liquid first – Add your liquid to the blender base first. This helps make blending the shake easier.
- Start slowly – Start the blender on low speed and then increase it gradually before bringing it to full speed.
- Use frozen fruit – For this recipe, it is important that the banana is frozen to ensure that you get that delicious creamy texture.
- Skip the ice – If you usually add ice to your smoothies, you might be tempted to add this, but trust me, you don’t need to. Just use a frozen banana to keep things cold!
How to Freeze Bananas for Shakes and Smoothies
Whenever I have ripe bananas, I peel them, cut them in half, and add them to a freezer bag to freeze my smoothies and shakes. To prevent them from clumping together, follow these steps:
- Bananas in round pieces.
- Place them in a single layer on a baking sheet.
- Freeze for 1 to 2 hours or until solid.
- Transfer the frozen bananas to a resealable bag and freeze until ready to use.
